Hopeful Futures Video Artwork: Deliberative Tools for Citizens and Policy

My final video creation for Hopeful Futures (KCL, Policy Institute, residents from London Boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark and Tower Hamlets, London Councils) brings together the experiences of residents in London, as well as partners from London Councils on their thoughts of what a London well-adapted to extreme temperatures could look like by 2050. States of Hydration commissioned as a video essay for the Island to Island Symposium

I was commissioned to adapt my digital collage series and accompanying essay (‘States of Hydration’)[] into a video essay and delivered a pre-recorded presentation for the Island to Island Symposium held at Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, University of East Anglia online and in Norwich.

Waterscapes on Land video exhibited at 'Storm Warning: what does climate change mean for coastal communities?' at Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange, Penzance

Waterscapes On Land (2023) is also on view in Cornwall. The Storm Warning exhibition is a collaborative two venue project in partnership with Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange, Penzance, which seeks to raise awareness of the impact of the climate crisis on coastal communities in South Essex and Cornwall. Waterscapes On Land (2023) is my two-part project that is newly commissioned by Focal Point Gallery (Southend-on-Sea, UK), in partnership with the Catchment to Coast project. Waterscapes on Land (2023) on display across Southend-on-Sea High Street for Focal Point Gallery's annual Railway Bridge Commission

I created two digitally illustrated collage banners as a new temporary site-specific public artwork that communicates the local environmental activities taking place to mitigate flooding and coastal erosion. Over the summer, I worked with the Environment Agency’s Catchment to Coast Flood and Coastal Resilience Innovation Programme (FCRIP) project to visually and creatively map the nature-based solutions being used across Southend and Thurrock’s varied landscapes that are facing the impacts of the changing climate. States of Hydration Essay and Illustrated Collage Series Published in Holding Sway: Seaweeds and the Politics of Form UCHRI

Holding Sway is a 'series of photo essays channels a visual curiosity about seaweeds with considerations of militarization, gender, Indigenous sovereignty, extractive regimes, and climate change.' Invited by Foundry journal guest editors Melody Jue and Maya Weeks, I wrote an essay and created five accompanying illustrated collages that consider seaweeds through elementality and politics. Inspired by computer simulated satellite imagery of the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt, I write and visualise how ecologies, people, materials traverse waters across so-called borders, all the while sustaining culture and life.

The Growing Project: Digital Narrative Game

In place of a project evaluation report, Grand Union commissioned me to produce an interactive artwork to convey the work of The Growing Project, 'a transformative community programme using art making, gardening, cooking and simply being together as a way of offering support and friendship to people passing through difficult times, partnering with organisations supporting vulnerably-housed people and those experiencing crisis.' I produced 'The Growing Project: Digital Narrative Game', weaving the people, activities and creatures across the 7 sites of The Growing Project, and it is now playable online. Rain Paradox (2021) Exhibited in Uncertain Data at FACT in Liverpool

To culminate my year-long Jerwood Arts FACT Digital Fellowship, my artwork Rain Paradox (2021) - consisting of a video in collaboration with residents across the UK and a four-part illustrated banner collection - is exhibited at FACT Liverpool. The project gathers research around climate narratives about water scarity in the UK, and I present how official and local climate framings differently influence our public views of climate change. [Export Explode> Artwork Exhibited at Wat Tyler Country Park for Estuary 2021 and Metal Culture

[Export_Explode> is a video essay that identifies the unfinished histories of Britain’s explosives manufacturing, from their use in industrial and imperial expansions worldwide since the late 19th century, to their active legacies in contemporary extractivism and conflict. It was exhibited on the existing Explosives Trail onsite at the former Pitsea Explosives Factory on the Thames Estuary as part of Estuary 2021 for Metal Culture. (May 21, 2021 → June 12, 2021)

[Export_Explode> Artwork Commission for Metal Culture and Estuary 2021 at Wat Tyler Country Park

I was commissioned by Metal Culture to create an artwork that responds to the sites for Estuary 2021 (originally Estuary 2020, postponed due to the pandemic). During the artwork commission, I researched into former Pitsea Explosives Factory on the Thames Estuary. It produced munitions at the height of the Industrial Revolution, and is at the site of Wat Tyler Country Park, which is now an RSPB bird watching nature reserve. I created a video essay highlighting this history and the contradictions of the histories of extraction and of the British Empire alongside contemporary access to nature, all considering a climate justice approach.
