Hopeful Futures Video Artwork: Deliberative Tools for Citizens and Policy

My final video creation for Hopeful Futures (KCL, Policy Institute, residents from London Boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark and Tower Hamlets, London Councils) brings together the experiences of residents in London, as well as partners from London Councils on their thoughts of what a London well-adapted to extreme temperatures could look like by 2050. I co-created and performed a mythical character The Navigator for Eelyn Lee's year-long collaborative project that 'newly constellates diasporic identity and becoming' for East and Southeast Asians in the UK. Hopeful Futures Visioning Workshops: Deliberative Tools for Citizens and Policy

I was invited to work as the Guest Artist for Hopeful Futures - a project between KCL, Policy Institute, London Councils and residents from London Boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark and Tower Hamlets. Through partner information sessions, and the workshops I delivered, the programme tests deliberative and creative methods to imagine what a London well-adapted to extreme temperatures could look like by 2050 and inform local policymaking. ESEA Artists Futures Town Hall: Collectively imagining new landscapes for East and Southeast Asian [ESEA] artists in the UK and beyond

The ESEA Artists’ Futures research project arose from artists’ intervention and whistleblowing in 2020 about the systemic failures in the visual arts, in particular the failures of the ESEA visual arts landscape. The Town Hall assembled ESEA arts workers in Sheffield to discuss and vote on 8 motions to be published in a report to the arts sector reflecting on institutional racism and alternative. I led the subgroup moderation for the motion on 'organising.'

We looked at the different kinds of art practices (i.e. music, performing, visual arts, etc) across geographies and time. We intend to develop new narratives to educate ourselves and wider society about ESEA presence and histories in the UK to support long-term structural and social and cultural change.

Interdisciplinary Workshop to Explore Forest Soundscapes

During my first workshop with forestscapes, we listened to the collated sound files relating to forest issues - from researcher field recordings of sites experiencing deforestation, forest fires, reforestation, and more. We collectively framed critical questions to beign approaching listening as a method for understanding this wide and complex issue of forest life in changing environments and times.

Visiting Lecturer: Games and Playful Narratives for MA Global Media Management at WSA, University of Southampton

For the Spring term, Francis Gene-Rowe and I co-led the Games and Playful Narratives strand for the MA module Global Media 2: Industries and Technologies. As a seminar tutor, I led the weekly creative and practical workshops – following Francis' theory sessions – and in these, the student groups created their own digital or paper-based games, through narrative, character, and game design and mechanics. Eelyn Lee's 'Hong Kong Future Diaspora' Exibition at Bloc Projects, Sheffield

The exhibition shows Eelyn Lee's work-in-progress of her project 'Hong Kong Future Diaspora', which invites me and other collaborator through a 'process of devising a series of contemporary mythical characters Centring embodiment, conversation and improvisation, the group has created worlds and characters that forge a speculative ‘Hong Kong-ness.’' While I did not make it to perform during the live performance/ritual to bless the opening of the exhibition, choreographer Jan-Ming Lee took my place for my character The Navigator, and with our rehearsed movements. Inaugural WORLDING programme with Co-Creation Studio at MIT Open Documentary Lab

Together with socially-engaged artist Hwa Young Jung and Ruth McCullough (director, Abandon Normal Devices), we made up team WILD NATURES for the first WORLDING. The 2-week intensive programme aimed to develop potentials for co-creative processes with real-time 3D with Hwa Young's project – a paper-based game made with young people excluded from mainstream education in Northwest England, that explores on their terms the intersection of criminal and environmental justice. Digital Decarbonisation Consensus & Conjectures Workshop with Anne Pasek for Sunlight Doesn't Need a Pipeline

I joined 23 other arts practitioners, led by [Anna Pasek](https://www.annepasek.com/) to bring together a collective 'Decarbonisation and the Arts Consensus Statement.' The collaborative gathering and workshopping spoke insightfully to working in this space: working and experimenting with digital media technologies while remaining aligned to opposing the social and climate injustices we operate in; navigating capacities individually, collectively and around institutions, and importantly, being creatively inventive to the climate issues beyond only the metrics of 'sustainability.'

De-Cology: Walking in Our Mothers’ Gardens Closed Dreamscape Workshop with Ntando Cele for Complicité

I co-facilitated a 'dreamscape' workshop with [Ntando Cele](https://ntandocele.com/), a director, performer, and theatre maker based in Bern. With a small, closed group of artists and activists of the Global Majority, this workshop explored eco-feminist approaches for hope, connection and intersectionality. Our activities discussed the ancestral knowledge we practice in our everyday lives and what opportunities we saw for culture to solve climate change from our lived experiences.

Hybrid Space Workshop Series with 2NQ

What is the new normal? How can virtual communication reinforce communities and real-world interaction? I joined the Hybrid Space workshops, which convened a diverse group of creative and social practitioners in different places around the UK to make real world connections. Hybrid Space is an ACE-funded engagement programme by community arts organisation 2NQ which sought to learn from previous experiences of redesigning events during lockdown. We met almost weekly with group sharings and discussions on health, food, systems, neighbourhoods and climate change. (September 7, 2021 → October 5, 2021)

History Informed Futures With Beatrice Glow Published in Vector (British Science Fiction Association)

For the Chinese SF Edition of Vector (No.293, Spring 2021), guest edited by Yen Ooi and Regina Kanyu Wang, I interviewed artist Beatrice Glow about her work with colonial histories and science fiction's capactiy to help ‘tell truthful histories and envision just futures together’. I use my term 'history informed futures' as a base that resonates with us both as artists working with historical, contemporary and sf narratives, through community collaborations and digital media technologies. I'd been an admirer of Beatrice's work for years and it was a great opportunity to engage deeply in the richness of her work and values.

Gentle Strategising Curation with the MAMA Poule at MAMA in Rotterdam

Gentle Strategising was a full week of collective activities, organised by MAMA Rotterdam's 2020 'poule of programme makers' (Angela Chan (Worm: art + ecology), Leana Boven, Arvand Pourabbasi and Golnar Abbasi (WorkNot!), and Mary Ponomareva) in collaboration with local arts and activism groups. The space within and outside MAMA’s Showroom became sites for slow, open, creative, and reflective activities that strategically confronted urgent global injustices – reinforced by the pandemic, climate, racial and socio-economic injustices – at a local level. Hypericum: A Code of Practice Co-Research with Obsidian Coast

Alongside six other co-researchers, I was part of Obsidian Coast's Hypericum: A Code of Practice, a research project developing a collectively produced, ever-evolving code of practice for feminist, antiracist, anticolonial and environmentally sustainable arts organising. The project was led by a newly formed working group of UK based arts workers and small-scale organisations: Angela YT Chan, Divya Osbon, Anjali Prashar-Savoie, Jamila Prowse, Alba Colomo and Lucy Lopez (La Sala) and Nella Arne (Obsidian Coast). In Conversation: Changing Realities and Speculative Fictions in the work of Cao Fei - Writing Published with Science Fiction Writers Gu Shi and Regina Kanyu Wang for Serpentine Galleries London

Commissioned as an accompanying text to Cao Fei's exhibition Blueprints at Serpentine, I was invited to create a written response to the artist's science fictional themes in her films. I extended this conversation to science fiction writers Gu Shi and Regina Kanyu Wang (also an SF editor), and together, we discussed the context of Chinese SF throughout history and today. We touched on Cao Fei's films to explore of the topics in Cao Fei's works that resonate with the authors, such as rapid industrialisation, technology, labour, and the changing shapes of interpersonal relationships throughout society.

Climate Knowledges Curation Exhibited at MAMA Rotterdam Now An Online Game

My exhibition as Worm: art + ecology, Climate Knowledges, on show at MAMA Rotterdam, was adapted as a virtual exhibition experience as a result of the pandemic lockdown in the Netherlands. Game designers Louisa Teichmann and Noemi Biro translated the artworks through photogrammetry and digital files of the artist and activists works. The virtual exhibition is viewable online. Myco-Lective Residency with Feral Practice and Chisenhale Studios

I joined Myco-Lective, a programme for artists engaging with ecological thinking, climate change, and multispecies futures. It took its inspiration from human and non-human models of education, collective action, care, reciprocal networking, and mutual aid, including the mycorrhizal networks of the forest, where plants share nourishment and knowledge via the under-soil web of fungal mycelium. We met regularly online for a year, supporting each other through a rotation of workshops and discussions. (April 29, 2020 → May 11, 2021)

From West to East: Re-Locating a Speculative Centre Writing Published with Ama Josephine Budge for MIT Press and Whitechapel Gallery's Science Fiction

I was invited to contribute to the Science Fiction edition of the Whitechapel: Documents of Contemporary Art series, and with a preference to co-author, I in turn invited Ama Josephine Budge to collaborate with me. Together we co-wrote an article of the conversation we had at Iniva and the Stuart Hall Library on speculative fictions. The publication, edited by Dan Byrne-Smith, is 'the first major anthology to focus on relationships between science fiction and contemporary art, with topics ranging from accelerating technological change to global urbanization.' Unfortunately the press and editor erased my name from the credits, and mistitled our article to misname our co-authorship.

Connecting with Climate Arts in East Asia with the Developing Your Creative Practice (DYCP) Award from Arts Council England

I was granted the DYCP award to realise my research trip to Taiwan, Hong Kong and mainland China to research & connect with climate arts activities and networks in East Asia during winter 2019. Under my curatorial project name Worm: art + ecology, this research aimed to continue my long-term development of cross-cultural projects in the form of online and gallery exhibitions, workshops, publications and featured online artists profiles. The trip allowed for me to visit, connect and research with artists, curators, community collectives and science fiction writers in Taipei, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Beijing and Shanghai. Climate Science Research and Performance for Infintity Minus Infinity by The Otolith Group

I was invited by the Otolith Group to provide climate science research to inform part of the narrative for their film Infintity Minus Infinity (2019) and to perform with moss, green screen nails and the natural environment (after my project 'mossy soft spot'). 'Infinity minus Infinity, brings together dance, performance, music, recital and digital animation to compose a transhistorical zone in which the unpayable debts of racial capitalism cannot be separated from the ongoing crimes of capitalogenic climate catastrophe. The work enacts the durational timelines of past distress, present duress and future dread through the assembly of a chorus of transtemporal deities whose utterances, expressions, gestures and movements personify the compounded, accumulated, irreparable times and spaces of the hostile environment.' I was a recipient of the a-n Bursary, which allowed me to sponsor artists to profile their practice and projects through my curatorial online project, Worm: art + ecology. Through interviews and written features, the bursary supported practitioners to join the growing network of artists, activists and researchers who had contributed to widening the conversation on climate justice and the arts through Worm: art + ecology (2014-2021). Tracts Residency with Julia Crabtree and Will Evans at Wysing Arts Centre

I joined a 4-day retreat organised by artists Julia Crabtree and William Evans, who brought together a group of artists, writers and researchers at Wysing Arts Centre. Together with Katrina Black, Jamie Bracken Lobb, Lilah Fowler, Karen Kramer, Alice Hattrick, Rachel Pimm and Jamie Sutcliffe, our group spent time sharing works-in-progress, and took walks in the fields and spent time at the Wysing farmhouse. We heard from the artist duo about their long-term research themes and the development of their recent exhibitions 'Gullet' and 'Gulch', which led to further group discussions on our research practices that relating to the themes of ecologies, kin, care and collective learning.
