A Breath of Fresh Air Youth Programme Curation and Workshop for Wellcome Collection

I curated an creative, open workshop series for young people that centred air pollution issues relating to climate, health and race justice, working with Dr Chloe Trainor at Wellcome Collection throughout August 2022. Our Climate Action Consultation and Curation with LU Arts for Loughborough University

I was commissioned by LU Arts to establish a framework for the students and university board to act on sustainability and climate issues. I developed a research survey campaign; curated a series of engagement workshops - co-facilitated by sports researchers Dr James Esson and Dr Jamie Kenyon and the student group Loughborough Greens - and wrote a concluding report of student demands, which was launched at the culminating Student Assembly I organised for all stakeholders to discuss the next steps. Worm: art + ecology

Over 7 years, I independently produced a long-term curatorial project called Worm: art + ecology. It focused on communicating climate change justice issues through contemporary art and creative practices. I produced 5 international exhibitions under the name Worm: art + ecology, and regularly published interviews with practitioners on the website. I directly commissioned 53 artists worldwide for collaboration with project funding. When I began to deliver public workshops and talks in person, I gradually started to work under my own name, Angela YT Chan, and forming an artistic practice. (October 1, 2014 → December 31, 2021)

Climate Justice + SF Conference Curation for London Science Fiction Research Community

As part of the LSFRC's annual theme 'Activism and Resistance', I organised a day's conference focused on climate justice and science and speculative fictions. For Climate Justice + SF, the afternoon event featured artists, organisers and scholars working in climate justice and its themes around the world. We had a selection of workshop-style presentations and discussions, and the day concluded with a guest roundtable featuring Blanca S. Villalobos, Idman Abdurahaman and Chris Pak.

Turbidity Online Film Curation for New Cinema Shorts, AND Festival 2021

For New Cinema Shorts, I was commissioned by Abandon Normal Devices to curate a series of short films for its weekly online programme as part of AND Festival 2021. I framed my concept around 'turbidity' with the filmmakers Shamica Ruddock, Lo Lai Lai Natalie 勞麗麗 and Anuka Ramischwili-Schäfer. Turbidity is a collection of short films that capture the fractals of light, which flicker through the murkiness of movement and change. The works explore displacement, gender fluidity and multi-species conflicts, to accept belonging in its perpetually traversing and unclear state. (July 2, 2021 → July 9, 2021)

Climate and Culture Beyond Borders for British Art Studies Journal

With this British Art Studies Cover Collaboration feature, which responded to the theme of 'British Art and Natural Forces' proposed by the journal’s editors, I brought together four artistic practices of Sonia E. Barrett, The Bonita Chola, Michael Leung and INTERPRT, alongside my own. They highlight diverse activities among international, socially engaged, creative practices that relate to the core conversations on justice in environmental and climate issues. My curatorial statement critiqued the meaning of 'British' arts, especially in the context of climate themes, as I reflected on the arts sector in 2020. I outlined art worker struggles in light of years of government defunding, the pandemic, Brexit and the exceptionalism on the empire trained the state to hold in face of crises.

Gentle Strategising Curation with the MAMA Poule at MAMA in Rotterdam

Gentle Strategising was a full week of collective activities, organised by MAMA Rotterdam's 2020 'poule of programme makers' (Angela Chan (Worm: art + ecology), Leana Boven, Arvand Pourabbasi and Golnar Abbasi (WorkNot!), and Mary Ponomareva) in collaboration with local arts and activism groups. The space within and outside MAMA’s Showroom became sites for slow, open, creative, and reflective activities that strategically confronted urgent global injustices – reinforced by the pandemic, climate, racial and socio-economic injustices – at a local level. Climate Knowledges Curation Exhibited at MAMA Rotterdam Now An Online Game

My exhibition as Worm: art + ecology, Climate Knowledges, on show at MAMA Rotterdam, was adapted as a virtual exhibition experience as a result of the pandemic lockdown in the Netherlands. Game designers Louisa Teichmann and Noemi Biro translated the artworks through photogrammetry and digital files of the artist and activists works. The virtual exhibition is viewable online. Climate Knowledges Curation Exhibition at MAMA in Rotterdam and Online

I was commissioned to guest curate an exhibition for MAMA (Showroom for Media and Moving Art), on the Witte de Withstraat in Rotterdam about my research in climate change and justice. I framed the concepts around speculative fictions, histories and everyday knowledges of climate change across cultures and geographies. Invited exhibitors were Annie Mackinnon, Josèfa Ntjam and Regina Kanyu Wang with Tessa Qiu, and the local activists to form the Climate Visual Cultures Library. 'Through speculative ways of storytelling, from ancient mythologies to futuristic science fictions, we confront the colonial and patriarchal origins, and their exploitative processes, that produced the current climate crisis.' Refuse: (v)(n)(-) Online Exhibition by Worm: art + ecology

Throughout 2018, Refuse: (v)(n)(-) was an online exhibition of 16 artists in 13 projects covering a range of ecological issues. It was curated by Worm: art + ecology (aka Angela YT Chan) and designed by Alex Walker. It frames today’s environmental challenges alongside the current climate for creative production. Exploring three interpretations of the word refuse, as a verb, a noun, and a hyphenated potential, Refuse: (v)(n)(-) focuses on ecological resistance, deterioration and restoration. Tipping Points Curation Exhibited at Podium in Oslo

In my first year of online activities as Worm: art + ecology, I was invited by Podium in Oslo to guest curate its first international exhibition as part of the gallery's year-long focus on ecologies. Titled 'Tipping Points: Flourish and Collapse in the Circularity of the Geostory', it showed five international artists representing humankind’s micro- to macroscopic manipulations of nature that have accumulated to the ‘tipping points’ of climate change. Together with Rachel Pimm, Lori E. Allen, Joey Holder, Andreas Ervik and Jakob Kudsk Steensen, our exhibition opened on Earth Day 2016 with artist performances. The project was fully funded by Kulturrådet (Arts Council Norway). (April 22, 2016 → May 1, 2016)
