Blurred Events Writing Published for The End of the Present with Arts Catalyst, The Alternative School of Economics

I wrote a piece of short fiction that takes us to a near future in which pandemic time blurs world politics. I respond to the governments increased spending in defence, in contrast to its reluctance to maintain free school meals for children in poverty during the lockdowns. It was commissioned by The Alternative School of Economics (Ruth Beale & Amy Feneck), who created a free digital publication called The End of the Present to mark the end of their residency at Arts Catalyst.

krill this love Writing Exhibited for Under a Two-moon Belief System No Duality Endures by Alice dos Reis at Trixie, The Hague

I was commissioned by Alice dos Reis to write an accompanying text for their solo exhibition at Trixie in The Hague. Resonating with the themes of finding belonging, learning about and through other species, and feeling the spaciousness that exists in, between and beyond the Earth's various landscapes, I wrote a speculative fiction, with humour, from the perspectives of the krill that the protagonist bioengineer experiments on, in Alice's own sf narrative in their film that was on exhibition. My text was exhibitied on Trixie's exterior window for pedestrian viewing. (April 2, 2021 → April 25, 2021)

Communal Climate Knowledges Written Feature for OVEREXPOSED in Ecoes #1 for Sonic Acts

For Ecoes #1, an independent magazine about art in the age of pollution by Sonic Acts in light of the inaugural OVEREXPOSED Residency, I was featured by Victoria Douka-Doukopoulou. As an artist in residence, my work and research were outlined as a profile.

OVEREXPOSED Residency with Sonic Acts

I was selected to join the inaugural OVEREXPOSED Residency with Sonic Acts, which focused on creatively researching on the theme of pollution. For my one-month residency project, I continued my work into military history and began researching the effects of tear gas in the water system, namely the literature surrounding recent urban protests in relation to Hong Kong pro-democracy and the Black Lives Matter movements.

Climate Action Summary Report Research Published for UNCOP26 with Julie's Bicycle

Towards UNCOP26, I worked for a year as a Policy Research consultant on international cultural and climate policy at Julie's Bicyle, a leading not-for-profit for a just green transition for the arts sector. I led and conducted desk-based research to combine data from my analysis of publicly available national arts policies of 25 ODA countries, and data from my interviews with leading international arts leaders and government ministers on climate intentions in their sectors where culture intersects (culture/tourism/education). I also supported survey design to gather data from arts and culture bodies with national mandates and cultural ministries, and synthesised insights from in-depth international roundtables that Julie's Bicycle ran as part of the research programme. This report was launched and presented to policymakers at UNCOP26 to consider arts and culture's role in the global, just, green transition. (March 23, 2021 → February 1, 2022)

History Informed Futures With Beatrice Glow Published in Vector (British Science Fiction Association)

For the Chinese SF Edition of Vector (No.293, Spring 2021), guest edited by Yen Ooi and Regina Kanyu Wang, I interviewed artist Beatrice Glow about her work with colonial histories and science fiction's capactiy to help ‘tell truthful histories and envision just futures together’. I use my term 'history informed futures' as a base that resonates with us both as artists working with historical, contemporary and sf narratives, through community collaborations and digital media technologies. I'd been an admirer of Beatrice's work for years and it was a great opportunity to engage deeply in the richness of her work and values.

Climate Change and Contemporary Chinese Science and Speculative Fiction: Invisible, Extractive and Uneven Boundaries

My paper, delivered at the London Science Fiction Research Community (LSFRC) conference 'LSFRC Conference 2020: Beyond Borders' (2020), is now published in the Science Fiction Research Association (SFRA) journal, the SFRA Review. I explore the ecological, socio-political, and cultural processes relating to climate change, with the specific context of China's type of environmentalism and I outline the thematic portrayals of climate and environmental issues in key contemporary Chinese SF stories.

I was interviewed by Annie Mackinnon for her publication on 'investigating Industry 4.0’s intersections with political ecology, social justice and sustainability both within the Fashion Industry'. In my contribution, I spoke about my use speculative fiction as an approach to global climate change issues and how I engage with issues of justice through history in my artistic practice.
